Traveling in India: Impressions From the Road
First Impressions of India
India… I am overwhelmed from the experience. I can only speak from my perspective and exposure, but the time spent in the country will be forever etched in my mind. I can only share my impressions of traveling in India, so here goes:
A Kaleidoscope of Colors in India
India is a kaleidoscope of colors… beautiful bright colors in every hue. I have no idea how the clothing is kept looking brand new when I know it isn’t, and I’ve seen how garments are washed and dried.
India as a Melting Pot of Cultures and Religions
India is a melting pot of ethnicities and religions. Each, for the most part, respects or tolerates the other. Live and let live…
Conversations, Debates, and Passionate Discussions
Many discussions seem to be debates or arguments… each participant is loud and determined. Neither wants to concede anything. Somehow agreements are made, and then there’s more discussion and more debate. Both parties want to win, neither want to give.
The Challenges of Traveling in India
India (everywhere I visited) is dirty, littered, and clouded in smoke and smog. Even in the mountains at 6,500 ft above sea level and higher, there is a brown haze covering the landscape below.
India is crowded, a sea of people, all just trying to survive and claim a space for themselves. This applies on the street, on sidewalks, in buildings, in stores, literally everywhere. Each tries to push in front of the other, giving little or no consideration to their actions or others.
The roads, streets, and highways have no traffic rules… or at least none seem to be enforced. Cars, trucks, bikes, motorcycles, scooters, push carts, cows, goats, dogs, monkeys, tractors, tuk-tuks, pedestrians (including small, unattended children), and anything else you can imagine, share the road. There is no consideration for directional lanes of traffic… one must be prepared to avoid anything at any time.
The Noise and Energy of Indian Cities
The NOISE… incessant horns blaring, from every vehicle with a motor, demanding everyone and everything clear its path. (Imagine 100 vehicles vying for a space that would hold 10… and all 100 sounding the horn nonstop as if to say MOVE, I DEMAND THE SPACE.)
Poverty and Humanity in India
The poverty… unlike anything I’ve ever seen, EVER! Period.
The hearts and genuine care of the service industry people shine through at every opportunity.
Beauty Among the Chaos
I saw some of the most beautiful and amazing sights I’ve ever seen.
Traveling like we normally do was challenging. We are good at adapting, but this trip was tough… on several levels. We managed to figure it out, and got better with time.
The smell… enough said.
Final Reflections on India
I am ready to move on, and grateful that I can. Goodbye India.
